Schools should require a class for self image. There are doctors which people with eating disorders could go to; but it's a choice. If schools were to require students to take a class for self image, they are being forced to somehow accept and love the way they are inside and out. It would make them feel better about themselves.
Schools should require students to take a self image class because a big percentage of the people that suffer from an eating disorder are adolescents. It is proven from the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders that 95% of those who have eating disorders are between the ages of 12 and 25. If these self image classes were present in a student's daily school day, they would be exposed to concepts that teach them the right way to keep a good diet.
The Board of Education could say that adding this class would take away learning time from core classes such as english, math, or science, and the students won't be able to take in all the information. But, having a disorder can cause the brain to become less functional. When the body doesn't have enough nourishment, proteins, and vitamins, it will start to act unusual. It will start to use parts of itself to fulfill it's needs, including taking bits of the brain, causing it to act differently. Therefore if the student suffers from an eating disorder, they can be very distracted and won't be able to function in school at all.
Students may think that taking a self image class is pointless because they are happy with the way they are. Having confidence is great because that is what this class would be focusing on. It would be a good experience for the students without eating disorders because they could have a different perspective on their friends with the problem. Therefore, this would be a class to get students to build each other's confidence levels up and just be a friend to someone. A simple gesture of kindness could save someone's life.
