Taking a position: Who's to blame?: Essay

In my opinion, The tourist are to blame. They decide to get themselves into dangerous situations like the blowhole incident. If they payed more attention to warnings than none of this would've happened. I believe that the government can't be blamed for any of this because they can't spend their whole time on making sure the tourist follows the warnings. Tourist should know better to obey the signs.
The government did post up signs saying "blowhole: Park and walk at your own risk". After the first incident of the death at the blowhole, tourist still decided to go there. They did not  acknowledge the warning signs. Because they chose to do that, they had to pay the cost with their lives because they were not safe in that environment.
The tourist should be blamed because the government can't always be watching out every minute of every day if tourist are being safe while they go sight seeing. They trust that the tourist should know better and to do the responsible thing and obey the signs. If the people decide to go against the signs despite previous death cases caused by the blowhole, they would be at fault.
The article talks about a 41-year-old man by the name of Kevin Oakley drowned at maui's pools of Oheo after he rescued his 7 year-old son. The man was later pronounced dead, and the family received $2 million settlement from the federal government. That settlement also included to monitor the stream flow and have safety equipment for the stream. Tourist shouldn't wait until something tragic happens to one of their loved ones to put safety first. They should always be cautious of where they are and what they are doing.
Overall the tourist is at fault when it comes to the topic of these fatal incidents. Tourist needs to be more cautious and obey the warning signs posted in the areas where those incidents happened. The tourist could use common sense and conclude that those are dangerous places.

  1. Hi Tati,
Your essay clearly states an opinion and supports it. The first supporting detail works pretty well. The second one, however, is not completely accurate. The circumstances surrounding the death of the man who tried to save his son were different from the tourist who drowned at the blow hole. So you could choose and present your support more carefully for a stronger position paper.
