After the bombing of Pearl harbor, more military came to the state of Hawaii. This affected our state in a big way. The military isn't just a bunch of people taking our lands, even though people may have that perspective. Those people may not know it but the military help our economy in many ways.
Since so much of the military come to Hawaii, sales in businesses go up. Local stores and warehouses receive more than $1.5 billion paid in wages due to military personal spending. The more people of the military that come here, the more customers will be coming.
The military also helps the economy because a lot of them have families that they bring along. More families equal to more spending which will bring more customers to the stores and that can help Hawaii's economy very easily.
With the military living on our islands, it creates opportunities for more job openings. The military opens around 18,000 jobs in the state. This is a positive for our economy because it will bring a lot more business to Hawaii. Since there are so many families coming to the islands, our state provides them housing, which take a lot of our land. But, despite the land usage, it makes the military families feel much more comfortable living in a different state and they will be willing to keep staying here and that will help our economy.

Outside reading card
Overall i think i deserve a solid 3-. I think this because I chose a relavent quote for the conflict & resolution because it shows how the mom was totally against buying a duck because they were tight on money but in the end they did buy it and the family cared about each other and the duck as well. I honestly couldve done a better time with the pictures. I think i shouldve added more visual to the book so it doesnt look like a bunch of words on my picture.

Querencea Draft "Ala Moana beach"
When you think of the beach...what comes to mind? The whistling of the breeze, the burning of your feet on the sand, the chilled feeling you get when you jump into the clear blue water. I just love the feeling of "the beach". If i could go every day i most definatly would! It's one of my favorite things to do and in addition to that my favorite sport is paddling which is a water sport. One of the most memorable beaches for me is Ala Moana Beach. It's just so sentimental to me.
The moment i step a foot on that beach, i suddenly have a flashback attack! Memories of family get togethers, holiday celebrations, or just a day at the beach with some friends, pop up in my mind. It literally smacks a smile onto my face and the feeling I get.... HAHA PRICELESS! I remember as a child my family and I would gather at Ala Moana beach every year for Easter. The adults would hide the color splashing eggs that we had made the night before while the kids impatiently waited to look for them. As soon as all the eggs were hidden, us kids dramatically charged for anything colorful and oval shaped that was in sight. These sentimental moments is what makes this beach so speical to me.
Two years ago i started paddling for the first time. My friends from school had introduced me to it and i have been doing it ever since. We used to practice at magic island which is right next to Ala Moana beach. I remember the first day I went to practice, I didn't know what to expect. As my coach happily came up and greeted me with his warm smile and dimples. I noticed that he was a bit old but very experienced within this sport. I was confident in him that he would teach me the right techniques. As i took my first stroke with my wooden paddle into the water, I felt as weak as a twig! but as the months passed by I realized how much stronger i had got and pride came with it!
The beach is a place i love to go to when I need time to think. When i look out to the water and i place my feet in the sand, I go into a mode of silence. The flow of the waves make me feel calm; so does the view. Being at the beach gives me an oppourtunity to just be myself and forget all negativity going on in my life. It puts my feelings on a whole new level.
Some people may not understand the way I am but no one knows me more than myself. I can be a very deep person along with emotional. The beach keeps me calm and gives me some space away from the "worl" and it turns into a place where I can get to know myself a little bit better and figure out my true feelings about certain situations.

"Roots & recipes draft"
When I think about it, most of the filipino in me is from my dad's side of the family. So i automatically had an idea in my head, "GRANDMA CORA!! SHES PERFECT TO INTERVIEW!". My grandma is a type of woman that doesnt have a problem with helping anyone.
I walk through the door of my grandma's salt lake apartment. I get a warm welcome and a huge heart touching smile from her. The house is a bit compact but the atmosphere around my grandma is always bright. As i take a seat on the dining table i get a great view of crunchy orange carrots, grass colored green beans, raw potatos, and a lot more!
As a young stubborn little girl i remember running around with my sister while she cooked. Scents of mouth watering lumpia, adobo, chicken papaya, you name it, ran through the whole house. My sister and I would always know that if we were going to grandma's house, we wouldnt have to worry about going through starvation.
"Grandma how did you do it?...cook WHILE watching us..knowing us we were so hard head", i ask my grandma
"Im used to it...i had to do it when i was younger", she replies.
My grandma sets her old fashioned cutting board down on the table and nicely places some of the colorful vegetables, ready to cut. Her incisive knife starts to penetrate through the eye watering onion. As she cuts the rest of the vegetables, i ask her "did you like to cook when you were younger?" and she simply answered with "NO! my mom would pull my hair if i never cooked for everyone!". My grandma was and still is a very hard working woman and because of that i have an even greater appreciation for her and the things she does for me.
She throws the pork hash, vegetables, and shrimp inside the pan...bright and colorful like a lovely flower garden. You can just hear everything sizzle and you can already taste the outstanding flavors being created! My grandma says that many people don't add shrimp to their lumpia but she does to add her own flavor. She has a very strong taste for things. She was around 18 years old when she learned how to make lumpia and she experimented with the ingredients to improve the recipe.
"Grandma? there's shrimp? Taira doesnt like shrimp!", i notified my grandma since my sister doesnt like seafood
"shhhhh she will not know!!", answers my grandma with a mischievous voice.
I think back to when i was younger and I would always question what i was going to eat that day at grandma's. For me it was kind of a surprise everytime.I never knew what grandma had planned for my meal. Everytime she makes lumpia i suddenly become so impatient but once you take a bit into that crunchy shell and all the flavors break loose!
The cooking of the filing is accomplished! Next.... on to the wrapping. My grandma puts the filling on the wrapping then says, "make sure everything is tight". I attempted to make one perfectly on the first try...but failed! My grandma likes to make things perfect (i guess thats how my dad gets his perfectionist side of him). She perfects my incorrectly made lumpia, tucking the filling into the wrapper as if it was a blanket. She then places the lumpia into the pan to fry. While keeping my distance from the pan, i could see the oil agitatedly jumping out of the pan. The lumpia is finally done! crisp and golden! My grandma makes her sauce for it which contains of smashed garlic, vinegar, and soy sauce, and just a pinch of salt. YUM! you get a glance of the crunchy lumpia with a pool of sauce next to it...just waiting for it to be dunked in. Once you get a bite of that warm, crisp lumpia...a splash of flavors extravagently fill your mouth!
I am very appreciative that i have my grandma to mentor me on how to cook the recipes of our family. Even though i may not be totally connected to my culture...food will always bring me back. I am planning on learning alot MORE about the roots & recipes of my family and teach them to MY grandchildren when i get older. I may not have been present to the first making of these dishes but the recipes link us all together as a family.
